Americans love traveling abroad, experiencing new cultures, and exploring unfamiliar places. But while they're willing to travel thousands of miles to experience another country, many expect the people there to speak their language. Rather than learning a few words, some resort to speaking louder, pointing aggressively, or repeating themselves in English. Because apparently, the rest of the world should just understand American.
Using provocative humor, cultural satire, and unapologetically bold headlines, Duolingo's speculative “The World Doesn't Speak American” campaign pokes fun at American tourists who expect the world to accommodate them. Through relatable travel mishaps and hilariously uncomfortable situations, the campaign encourages Americans to step outside their comfort zones, embrace other cultures, and learn the local language before their next adventure. Because the best way to experience another culture is to actually connect with it.
